  2. Add write permissions to user (~) directory for SSH application user

The application user does not have write permissions to their own user directory (i.e. `~/`). This prevents any application that needs to write to this directory from being run when logged in as an application user, such as git, ssh, npm, etc.

Making the user directory for the application user writable by the application user, so that new files and sub-directories can be created, will solve many issues that myself and others are having running applications when logged in as an application user.

Other feedback ideas this should solve include:

Please enable NPM in SSH when we are using application…

  4. Tracked deletions in git should be synced with the server upon deployment

Currently when using the git deployment feature, if you delete a previously tracked file and push this change to the server it doesn't delete the file from the server.

This means you're left with lots of legacy files that are no longer needed, and your repo is no longer in sync with your server files.

This can cause issues if you ever wanted to push changes back from the server to git as it would then track the previously deleted files and re-add them to the sever!

I'd assume this to be expected behaviour but there might be a reason…

Thanks, Harry, for taking the time to report this.

I’d like to better understand your use-case in order to figure out what’s going on.

For example, if I have a git repository deployed on my server on Cloudways, and if I go ahead and delete an already tracked file from the repository on my local computer and push the changes upstream to the remote repository and then pull those changes on my Cloudways server, I do see that the deleted file is gone from my public_html/ (or any other deployment) directory. Are you having trouble with that?

Or is your workflow different from what I’ve described? Please let me know so I may check it thoroughly.

    Thanks.

    Cloudways Team

  5. Support multiple nodejs versions like v6, v7 and v8

I recommend you use NVM, so that we can install and select whichever version of Node we want. This would also help with permission issues.

  8. Update Apache 2.4.28 or later after website failed penetration test

One of our clients recently undertook a penetration test on their site in accordance with their ISO application. It was highly recommended that Apache was upgraded to version 2.4.28 or later as Apache 2.4.10 was reported to have multiple vulnerabilities.

Most large UK based companies will undergo a similar ISO application so this should really be completed.

    Thanks!

  9. automatic restart when server goes down

I think it's essential that the servers are fixed so that if they go down they automatically restart the server especially on digital ocean + vultr

A few times I've had the site receive a traffic spike out of the ordinary and it pulled my sites down until I manually rebooted it. It should be automatic.

  10. Install X-sendfile on Server

    Install X-sendfile on Server

According to this article below, you mention using X-Sendfile to serve digital downloads for woocommerce. It is not currently installed on servers by default, and would be great if it was. Also to provide instructions on best way to setup for secure downloads for woocommerce.

  11. Allow NGINX to work in all but specified folders

I had crushed in a user case which required to manage file permissions via .htaccess RewriteRules, with files physically available inside web-visible folders instead of logic-protected folders, so I had been forced to have CloudWays disable NGINX for my server.

Instead, it would be nice to have a panel where to configure specific folders with Apache-based file serve, instead of NGINX-based.

I think this new compression tool developed by Google, will bring awesome performance benefits to all of us.

  13. Provide newer version on Nginx

Please consider providing a newer stable version of Nginx.

New servers are still installed with 1.8.x which has bugs, most significantly this:

    https://trac.nginx.org/nginx/ticket/959

The bug causes major incompatibility between PrestaShop and Nginx when HTTP/2 is enabled. Ie. you can't add products to the shopping cart etc.

I understand that you don't wan't to be first mover on new version, but 1.8 is quite old by now.

  14. Add a button to apply MYSQL user ownership to the public_html directory

Adding a button to apply MYSQL user ownership to the files public_html directory for Moodle will save CSR time and allow them to work on more pressing issues. At the moment you have to contact Cloudways to fix the permissions on that folder after you upgrade your Moodle installation.

  15. Add geo detection capabilities into Varnish

Please add geo detection capabilities into Varnish, this will accelerate use case scenarios where geo detection is essential.

For e.g. in WooCommerce, their current method to provide multi-currency that's compatible with cache is using Woocommerce based geo detection, which tends redirects the visitor 4 times to the correct URL of the page with the correct currency/tax displayed.

Other multi-currency plugins attempt improve this but their loading speeds are too slow, drastically affecting woocommerce store loading times, and making caching useless.

By having geo detection capabilities right in the server stack (Nginx or Varnish, which ever is hit first by visitors)…

  17. Allow change of PHP opcache max_accelerated_files setting

I would like to change PHP setting opcache.max_accelerated_files. Its default value, 2000, if far smaller than number of files I need for my 3 apps - there's about 30000 php files that could be cached. This is very "low hanging fruit" for performance optimizations. Please add the option to change this php setting.

  18. More servers located in Brazil!

The only server located in Brazil is from Amazon. The value is too high for more common applications. Please, we urgently need more servers in Brazil regardless of the provider.

  20. Allow asynchronous logging via Loggly, Papertrail, or Splunk

Allow asynchronous (fast, non-blocking) logging via syslog daemon.

You don't even need to make it a 1-click installation for Loggly, Papertrail, or Splunk.

Just allow us to use the syslog daemon and then we can follow instructions at https://www.loggly.com/docs/php-logs/ or http://help.papertrailapp.com/kb/configuration/configuring-centralized-logging-from-php-apps/ or wherever.

Those instructions say they'd require root access (which Cloudways customers don't have), but it wouldn't require root access if you did the first steps for us.

    Thanks!
