mariaDB
Faster and better database. Created by Original developer of Mysql and Used by best of several big players as alternative for mySQL
This is now completed.
Under Server Settings & Packages section (Server tab) you can replace mysql with mariadb.
Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure
that all the applications in the server will work with the deployed database.
Enjoy!

Admin: Are you getting closer on an ETA or maybe have an update about this?
I know it's not an easy task, just wondering :-)

Update.
Before we can offer MariaDB, we need to complete the deployment of a new orchestration system which we have in the latest stages.
Not all applications that we support will work with MariaDB, so we will continue to deploy by default Debian stable Mysql as database.
What we plan to do though, is to offer an option in the server settings section to switch from Mysql to MariaDB. Customer will be responsible to ensure that the applications that he/she is deploying in the server are fully compatible with the version of MariaDB to be deployed.
We will use same approach for other packages people have been asking for (different php version, different mysql versions, different apache versions...).
As we have merged all this, it may take a bit longer but we should have this functionality available for everyone within the coming weeks.
Let us know your thoughts.

We’ve been using MariaDB because of the better performance it provides over MySQL, and for the performance-focued Cloudways VM doesn’t it make a lot of sense to use MariaDB instead of MySQL?

I have not enough knowledge about this, but what I read, it looks like this somehow belongs to service as Cloudways and it can be some other ''extra'' bonus ... I just love innovative technology and think Cloudways is on this train
